Federal Tax Payment Options
The IRS provides several ways to make federal tax payments online. For most individual taxpayers paying from a bank account, IRS Direct Pay is a convenient option with no processing fee.

How to use IRS Direct Pay

Select Make a Payment, then choose the reason for your payment:
- Balance Due
- Estimated Tax
- Other Payment Types
- Enter the requested taxpayer information, including your Social Security Number or ITIN, name, and address.
- Complete the IRS identity-verification steps using information from a previously filed tax return.
- Enter the routing number and account number for the checking or savings account you want to use.
- Choose the payment date. Direct Pay allows eligible payments to be made now or scheduled in advance.
- Enter the payment amount. IRS Direct Pay currently permits payments of up to $10 million per transaction.
- Carefully review the payment details and submit the payment.
- Save the confirmation number. The IRS provides a limited period after submission in which you can use that number to check payment status.
- Direct Pay itself does not charge a processing fee.
- A scheduled payment can generally be changed or canceled until two business days before the scheduled payment date.
- Electronic payments may take several business days to appear on an IRS account.
- Direct Pay may not be available when the IRS cannot verify you using a previously filed return, including certain taxpayers who have never filed or have not filed for several years.

Federal tax payments can be made through IRS-approved card and digital-wallet processors. The third-party processor charges a convenience fee.

- Save your confirmation number. Keep it with your tax records as proof that the payment was submitted.
- Allow processing time. An electronic payment may take several business days to appear on your IRS account.
- Schedule ahead when appropriate. Certain IRS electronic payments can be scheduled well in advance.
- File your return on time even if you cannot pay in full. Filing and payment obligations are separate, and timely filing can help avoid additional penalties.
- Estimated tax payments are generally quarterly. Typical due dates are April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15, although weekends and holidays can affect the actual deadline.
